In LABRAVA, we have Glenn Hicks, a cop in Boca Raton who’s never in a scene, but is mentioned a few times. He may or may not be related to Roy Hicks, the ex-cop/ex-con associate of Jack Delaney’s in BANDITS.

Speaking of Delaney, in CAT CHASER we have Mary Delaney, wife of Andres De Boya, (thug and former third world Secret Police Chief), who falls for George Moran. There’s no mention of whether Mary and Jack Delaney are related.

Also in CAT CHASER, we have Marshall Sisco, the private investigator. His daughter is Karen Sisco from OUT of SIGHT and KAREN MAKES OUT fame.

Jimmy Capotorto is mentioned in CAT CHASER. Years later, he pops up again in GET SHORTY

In PAGAN BABIES, Ranco (Harry Mitchell’s company in 52 Pick-Up) is mentioned.

I’ve begun to wonder whether there might be some sort of family connection (Hopefully none – Mr Schaefer, please!) between the early and later Early (Lieutenant and subsequently Captain in ‘Gunsights’ and ‘Hurrah for Captain Early’) and the even earlier Early (August 12, 1884) in ‘Hombre’. (No first name, no pack drill: man was just a goldanged saddle tramp – please, Mr Schaefer!)

Both Dennis Lenahan and Billy Darwin in TISHOMINGO BLUES once worked at Spades in Atlantic City, Darwin running the sports book and Dennis dealing cards for a week until he quit, fed up with wearing a uniform.

Spades casinos were owned by Tommy Donovan in GLITZ, one in San Juan and the other in Atlantic City.

In Big Bounce, there is a character named Walter Majestyk, who is a Justice of Peace. Could there be any relation with Vincent Majestyk, the title character from “Mr. Majestyk”?

Got another one though its pretty remote. At the beginning of Unknown Man #89, Jack Ryan and Jay Walt are serving legal papers on a woman and her husband. At first, the wife says her husband isn’t home. Then the husband comes out and Ryan says, “I thought you were on vacation”. The husband replies, he is working the second shift at Ranco. Ranco is Harry Mitchell’s company from 52 Pick Up. As someone else pointed out, Ranco is discussed in Stick as well.

In Swag, Leon Woody is talking about “another guy named Ryan”. He talks about how this other Ryan used to play baseball. This is clear reference to Jack Ryan from Big Bounce and Unknown 89.

“Donnell went to the bar that time where he noticed Juicy Mouth was sitting and took the stool next to him, but didn’t speak till an old man finished with ‘Tishamingo Blues,’ Thelma riding along, the old man saying he was going to Tishamingo to get his hambone boiled, on account of Atlanta women had let his hambone spoil.”

FREAKY DEAKY, p. 164 (paperback edition)

No big deal, LA Crim, but I posted that one back in August ‘02.

I only mention it ‘cause it’s one of the few touchstones I noticed.

C’mon, man, gimme my props.

Joe

I had a vague feeling that that touchstone had been mentioned here, but decided to post about it anyway on the theory that I might be wrong or, if it had been posted, that new readers might not have seen it.

As I come across them, I post them. I think it’s better to risk doubling up once in a while than to let days go by with no new posts here.

Moselle

In 1987, Moselle was Booker’s lady, the one who called him on page one of FREAKY DEAKY and got him to sit in the chair, activating the pressure-stabilized dynamite in the cushion.

In 1996, we meet Moselle again, this time living with Snoopy Miller in OUT OF SIGHT.

A lot of Touchstones have been repeated, but I really like the detail that some people put into their posts.

Keep up the good work.

Don’t forget to check out the old posts.
