I put A Farewell to Arms on the shelf, in favour of starting to read The Friends of Eddie Coyle. I’m only three chapters in, so far, but it is really good. I can’t wait to see what direction the story takes.

John, I know you’re a busy man, but if you get chance to make comments about the other George V. Higgins novels you have been reading, I’d be very interested to read what you have to say.

I found a George V. Higgins cover, here, that bears more than a passing resemblance to Pagain Babies, by Mr. Leonard.

That’ll be going on the wishlist. Has anybody seen this film?

It is an excellent novel.  I read it for the first time two years ago.

Mr. Leonard wrote an introduction to this book.  Follow the link below:

My Criterion release of Eddie Coyle arrived today.  Get some, yeah!

Great double feature with “Blast of Silence” I recorded off of Turner Classic Movies last night.

Finally got around to reading Eddie Coyle. Fantastic stuff. Great intro by Elmore. It is clear to see how Elmore incorporated Higgins’ style into his work. Have ordered “Cogan’s Trade”.

Hey, Jade.  The movie version of “The Friends of Eddie Coyle” is pretty good.  Much of this is due to the cast.  There isn’t a false note in the
group.  Robert Mitchum plays Eddie as a man worn down by the life he has chose, caught between his criminal buddies and the police.
“The Friends of Eddie Coyle” is one of those wonderful early 1970s crime movies that should be shown as a group with “The French Connection”, “The Seven Ups” (a personal fave), and “The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three”.  I cannot make a comparison of “Eddie
Coyle” the movie to the novel. Have not read the book.

Did you know that Susan Boyle is the daughter of Peter Boyle?

Have now finished “Cogan’s Trade”. In my opinion, a better all around work that “Eddie Coyle”. Great dialogue. Higgins’ works really need to be read more than one time to appreciate as many things slip through cracks on first reading. Lots of similarities between Elmore and Higgins regarding dialogue of everyday matters by guys about to whack people. Also read “Kenndey For The Defense” by Higgins, but was not as impressed as Coyle and Cogan.
