‘Dutch’ was interviewed briefly on Jan. 29, 2010 by Bill Shea of Crain’s Detroit Business about the reclusive literary legend’s passing at age 91.

“I’ve read all of his stuff. I loved it. Why he stopped writing, I’ll never know. Maybe he didn’t.” . . .

Leonard, 84, recalled reading some of Salinger’s magazine stories after the war and later all of his books, but he’s unsure if the author’s unique style rubbed off on him.

“It might have had some influence. I haven’t thought about that closely,” he said. “At that time, I was influence by writers like Hemingway, for example.”

To give readers his best, Elmore, too, writes to please himself. But…

“There is a marvelous peace in not publishing,” J.D. Salinger told The New York Times in 1974. “Publishing is a terrible invasion of my privacy. I like to write. I love to write. But I write just for myself and my own pleasure.”

JD, certainly a genius, but certainly also deeply troubled.
