CUBA LIBRE
FORTY LASHES LESS ONE

Yuma Prison, Hell-Hole on the Bluff, is mentioned in both books. It’s mentioned in a lot of the westerns. Mr. Rynning was the superintendent of Yuma in 40 LASHES. He was away checking out the new prison replacing Yuma. Mr. Rinning of the Hell-Hole on the Bluff is mentioned in CUBA LIBRE. He was also the superintendent.

Different spelling in the paperbacks. Probably the same person.

The last line of “Stick” is: Stick thought “There you are”. In Swag, Frank Ryan’s favorite expression was “Well. Here we are”. I liked how Elmore gives a salute to the late Frank Ryan by ending “Stick” with those words.

Harry Dean Stanton is mentioned in BE COOL and “Tenkiller.”

Is he in any other books?

It would be great if he showed up again . . .

I think Harry Dean was mentioned in Maximum Bob.
I got to work with Harry Dean and he is a big fan of Elmore Leonard, so is John Goodman.

FREAKY DEAKY - OUT OF SIGHT - TISHOMINGO BLUES
Booker, the guy that sits on the chair with dynamite and ends up getting blown up in FREAKY DEAKY, was once in Young Boys Inc.

REPOST: JohnnyMoreno on November 04, 2003 - -
When Glenn goes to meet Snoopy Miller in Detroit in OUT OF SIGHT, Snoopy is telling Glenn about the sights and how he was affiliated when he was younger with a group of kids called Young Boys Inc.

Robert Taylor from TISHOMINO BLUES also was in Young Boys Inc. when he started the street life.

Found another reference to Elmore’s strong dislike for adverbs. In “Freaky Deaky”, Robin talks about the books she has written as being “full of rape and adverbs”. In “Split Images”, Angela Nolan is discussing writing her book on wealthy people with Bryan Hurd. She says, “It would have to be straight impressions without cute asides. And no adverbs.”

In “Unknown Man #89”, Virgil Royal, Tunafish and Raymond Gidre all get killed at Watts’ Club Mozambique. Early on in “The Switch”, we learn that Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara met for the first time at Watts’ Club Mozambique. Louis was tapping his swizzel stick to Groove Holmes’ beat and Ordell said, “My man, we don’t go to your clubs and fuck with the beat, do we?”
