I was suprised to see the guy from CSI and NYPD Blue is playing Cal. How did he pull it off?

Is this available only on VHS?

First time poster here. Cool forum. Been reading Elmore nonstop for the last month or so. I’m hooked.

What do you mean?  He’s a working actor, he auditioned, he got the part.  It was 1997. Caruso was still trying to make it in the movies.

It appears to be only available on VHS.

First time poster here

Welcome.

I didn’t mean to imply he wasn’t qualified, just from what I’ve seen from his acting, he didn’t strike me initially as an ideal fit as Cal.

So this was released on Showtime, correct? I wonder if they play it anymore.

How is the movie anyway?

I saw it on TV in Brazil in 2000.

It is available on Netflix streaming.  I haven’t watched it yet.

GOLD COAST does not get mentioned very often when adaptions of Dutch’s novels to film are discussed. It is more than reasonably faithful to the novel of the same name. If GOLD COAST had a theatrical release it would be mentioned along with GET SHORTY, JACKIE BROWN, and OUT OF SIGHT.

After posting my comment on GOLD COAST, I decided to IMDb this title and see what other film lovers had to say. There were nine viewer posts and all but one were positive. More than one singled out the plot, and how there was more to it than most films in the theatres. I’ll have to swing by the local Best Buy and check to movie bargain bin. One of the IMDb posts mentioned that they got their copy there for $2.99, a bargain if there ever was one.

I don’t think it was ever released on DVD.  The post is probably referring to the VHS release.

It seems you are correct. Luckily I own a dual player.

Saw Gold Coast and Stick on streaming netflix. Clearly B-movies, but not bad, sticking close enough to Elmore’s plots. I never pictured Stick with facial hair, but when he’s played by Burt Reynolds… And when Gold Coast opened with a shakedown at a high class Detroit country club, I thought the film was morphing into The Switch. Or am I misremebering which story that scene actually occurs?

Same goes for “Pronto.” Peter Falk WAS Harry Arno, if you ask me.
