Elmore is receiving the F. Scott Fitzgerald on Saturday, October 25th.  He’ll talk a little about Fitzgerald and do a reading.  If you have any impressions or critical thoughts about Fitzgerald’s life or work post them here.

Is there any thread that connects Fitzgerald to Elmore Leonard?

Somewhere on this forum Elmore is quoted as saying he ‘doesn’t like Fitzgerald’s voice.’

They both had the same agent, H. N. Swanson.

Did Elmore say why he chose to read the opening scene from Killshot?

Oh, no doubt, it’s a terrific opening - the only book that opens in Toronto, of all places.

But there are so many others. He could have read the opening of Pagan Babies or Freaky Deaky or Up in Honey’s Room or… well, yeah, any of them.

There is something strangely moving about that opening.  Indeed, literary.  Not one wasted word.  I know you are not complaining, John, but come on, he mentioned your precious Blue Jays!  What more can he do for our friends to the North?

I would have liked to have heard the reading.

There’s not really a lot going on at the festival in town right now. This year is focusing on Irish literature and Colm Toibin is headlining. I remember when Elmore was here and he read from Mr. Paradise, it was a lot of fun. People buy subscriptions without always knowing who all the writers will be so I think there were a number of people in the audience who’d never read an Elmore Leonard novel. One of the scenes he read was where the lawyer advises the two hitmen that they’ll need another source of income and he suggests home invasions. There’d already been some casual racism in the scene and the audience was laughing pretty hard, letting out the tension. I think quite a few people went out and bought the book.

Too bad Elmore isn’t here this year. Maybe next year when Road Dogs comes out.

I hope to be able to post Elmore’s whole reading including the Pelecanos introduction.

Celebrate Rockvile’s Favorite Son at The F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Conference
By Jill Earl

In this piece, Jill Earl says that Elmore’s wife gave him the cupcake.  It was Festival Organizer, John Moser’s wife, Marlene.
