Ha ha.

I was just wondering what part of the book would make the best excerpt.

I had to laugh when I saw that comment.

Be good to get hold of a copy of that, with the first chapter.  Wonder how much it goes for now.

If you can’t get hold of Linda’s titties, the magazine would be a decent alternative.
$12 and it’s yours.

That’s pretty cheap for a mag that’s 23 years old, has EL inside, and also has a cover with Goldie Hawn, actually looking attractive- in a very eighties-trampy sort of way.

I’ve just ordered this, through Amazon.com. It may take a while to reach Japan, but it was priced at a very cheap $2.50.
Plus postage, of course, but it still ends up pretty cheap for such an old magazine. Especially one with Elmore inside, and I notice also, Ray Bradbury is featured.

My copy of Glitz says, “Portions of this book have previously appeared in Playboy.”

Anybody know which parts?

John (and whoever else is interested),

January ’85 Playboy arrived today.
I quickly flicked to page 154, trying (rather unsuccessfully) not to be too distracted by the abundance of eighties au naturale shots.
It starts with Chapter 2; Isidro driving Teddy around. A quick scan ahead led me to believe that the Glitz featured in Playboy consisted of Chapter 2 and 3. I was all set to report my findings here, in a post. I’m glad I chose to read the entire piece before posting; I was quite surprised.
As I read further it became obvious that whole sentences, paragraphs and sometimes, whole pages were missing. The further I went, the bigger the leaps and bounds became.  Whole chapters were bypassed, except for the odd significant detail, here and there. I then started to realize what the piece was….

It’s a ultra-condensed version of the entire book Glitz. But obviously leaving massive portions out.
It starts with Isidro driving Teddy around and winds up with the very final scene of the book (I won’t spoil it for those who’ve not read Glitz yet).

I’m not sure if this format was the work of Elmore himself, or if it was left to another to edit the entire story into a short.

If anyone’s interested, and if Gregg has no objections, I would be willing to type out the whole piece in Word, then paste it onto the forum for others to read and compare.

I stand corrected if the Glitz excerpt in Playboy is an abridged version of the novel.  I’ll have to look into it.  As for reprinting it at the site, all we learn is how one Playboy editor hacks up Elmore’s work.  That’s more depressing than interesting.

Point taken. It was quite strange to read.
Speaking of the editorial ‘butchering’, I noticed that sentences were sometimes altered; words replaced. Teddy, when speaking of prostitutes, says, “I’m not into hoors”. In Playboy, it reads: “I’m not into hookers”.

There were other instances, but I won’t bore you.
