That’s a biased review. The changes that were made hardly made Raylan a more interesting character for television. I think the writer of that piece just has a little thing for Timothy Olyphant. Don’t get me wrong, the show is very good. But Mr. Leonard’s Raylan is much richer.

I picked up the new “Raylan” last night, and finished it this afternoon. What can I say, except that EL is a National Treasure. When I read the line “Valdez is coming,” I couldn’t pry the smile off my face.

Thanks, EL

Only two chapters in, and it’s reading like an instant classic. Had to google Mail Pouch to get the chewing tobacco reference. Loved the “Valdez is coming” line. Best line so far though is the last line of Chapter 2, on Pervis’ scene exit:

He got in his blown Ford V8 and blew away.

I can’t help but wonder if Delroy Lewis was named as an homage to Delroy Lindo, who played Bo in “Get Shorty.”

Nearly finished, but I gotta say, this is reading like no other Elmore Leonard novel. It’s more like a loosely related collection of short stories or novellas. After the first few chapters, when Art makes an appearance it’s time for a new caper to start. You get a little more of Raylan background as they reminisce, and then it’s off in a new direction with all but one or two new characters, like when Bugs Bunny narrates in the segues of the Bugs Bunny movies, setting the scene for the next adventure.

I’d like to see Jackie’s story expanded, and there’s gotta be more room for Bob Valdez. Maybe Raylan will catch up with both of them in Palm Springs, Bob working date orchards in Indio, Jackie working her way to the World Series of Poker. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

I agree; it’s hard for me to pinpoint why, but it seemed like there was a different rhythm to Raylan.

Good book though. Out of the last three releases, I put it ahead of Djibouti but a notch below Road Dogs.

To use a musical comparison, I find Raylan akin to Bob Dylan’s last record, Together Through Life. Not a classic that you would put aside Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde or Blone or Blood on the Tracks (In Elmore’s case, take your pick) but you could still sense the author was still having fun and pushing boundaries after all these years.

It is like Bringing It All Back Home.

You named the must have Dylan albums.  Blood on the Tracks changed my life.

Yup, both great albums. Picking my favorite Dylan record is as hard picking my favorite Elmore novel.

Of course, I meant Blonde on Blonde

I just read Pronto and i must say Raylan even though he wasnt POV character all the time he was very similar to tv version. He was as cool, funny style, few words kind of man.  Maybe this new novel changed too much to fit the tv show.

I respect the tv show for being similar to the Raylan in Pronto, a great adaptation of the character in that book atleast.  I adore Justified but the writing cant be compared to EL best works.

At $90 a quarter ounce for the better stuff ($90 will get you a half ounce of decent dro) that’s $360 an ounce. At that rate a pound is worth $5760 or roughly $5k in bulk. So 6 pounds would run about $30k. It would have to be some really good shit to go for much more than that.

Or so I’ve heard…
