You all will have the opportunity to see the remake of 3:10 to Yuma soon. Despite some reservations, I see the remake as genuine, at least as genuine as you can be in the post Western, post noir era.  Today, Kevin Costner is making noise about doing another Western.  There was a rumor a while back that he wanted to remake Hombre

Do you think another of Elmore’s classics should be remade (Valdez?), or do you think these Hollywood guys with a western appetite should choice something else off the Elmore Leonard Western Menu?  If so. what?

My number one with a Mauser bullet is Cuba Libre.  The Coens tried to get it going and failed.

It’s unique.  I call it a tropical western.

FORTY LASHES LESS ONE.  I am begging for this one to be made.  Someone owns the rights, correct?

I love HOMBRE and VALDEZ IS COMING, but 40 needs to be made.

CUBA LIBRE is a good call, Gregg.

UNKNOWN, SWAG, and LABRAVA would be nice.

Rumor has it that Mr. Elmore Leonard is thinking about doing another Western.

That would be a very good idea.

Rumor also has it that there are some unpublished Western short stories.

The world needs more Elmore Leonard Westerns.

Having seen True Grit i think only Coen brothers is good choice for adaptating EL westerns.

Not like Clint Eastwood will direct a western these days.

Gunsights would be the most natural fit for today’s blindingly liberal Hollywod. Big scope, the corporate mining encroachment easily adaptable to an environmental and not just leave-the-indengious-culture-alone message as with Avatari. Hell, woman even seizes the day at the end. Can’t get more Hollywood than that.

Some of Mr. L’s most complex characters, something vapid actors live for.

I actually can’t believe it’s not already in the can. Should have been done for TV when miniseries were all in vogue.

GUNSIGHTS is probably his best written western.  The ending is classic Elmore Leonard.

Gregg put a great article on the website about GUNSIGHTS and how it came about.

I have to agree with Mike, GUNSIGHTS would make a damn fine motion picture.  I too would like to see FORTY LASHES LESS ONE made into a film.  Perhaps some industrious screenwriter with a real imagination could go back to the pulp western stories and try combining two or three into one.  Intertwine the stories.  Just a thought.

I assume with the success of TRUE GRIT, a thousand copy-cat westerns are in the works.

Mr. Leonard has a dozen classic short stories.  A remake of VALDEZ or HOMBRE?

It has to be 40 LASHES.
