Director Daniel Schechter On How The Indie Helped Him Score The Jackie Brown Prequel

Discerning filmgoers aghast at the prospect of paying good money to see new releases “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” or “Movie 43” have better option right at their fingertips: “Supporting Characters,” Daniel Schechter’s winning indie comedy about two 20-something film editors (played by “Girls” star Alex Karpovsky and Tarik Lowe) navigating life and love in New York.

With “Supporting Characters” out on VOD now, Schechter spoke to HuffPost Entertainment about the inspirations for his film, the pros and cons of the current indie film landscape, and what fans can expect from his adaptation of “The Switch,” Elmore Leonard’s novel about Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara, the characters Leonard later featured in “Rum Punch,” which turned into the 1997 film “Jackie Brown.”

Janet Maslin Review of Tishomingo Blues

The New York Times
Leaving Out the Parts Readers Skip

BYLINE:  By JANET MASLIN

Elmore Leonard’s latest book features a cool operator with a laid-back style, a wry, sneaky observer of human nature. He enjoys inhabiting the world of crime. He’s a smoothly calculating guy who plays all the angles. And if he takes his time getting what he wants, the important thing is that he knows how to get it.
That describes a character named Robert Taylor, the principal conniver in “Tishomingo Blues.” But of course we’re talking about the author, too. Mr. Leonard, sharp as ever, has concocted another deft, funny book about dueling miscreants, and this time he has staged the duel in costume-party style. There are ways to explain where this fits into the wide panorama of his earlier work, and why this book is a particular success. But Mr. Leonard has stated, in a list of suggestions to other writers, that it’s smart to leave out the parts that readers skip.

Justified - The New Season

The relationship between Elmore and Justified—“as fascinating and complicated as the show itself”

Salon Magazine
BY KRISTOPHER JANSMA

Timothy Olyphant as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Credit: James Minchin/FX)
FX’s hit series “Justified,” which returns on Tuesday for its fourth season, has been hailed as groundbreaking for its complex, moral storytelling, its modern-Old West setting of Harlan, Ky., and for its lawman hero, Raylan Givens, perpetually wearing a white cowboy hat and played with no small amount of charm by Timothy Olyphant.

But the show has been quietly breaking another kind of ground these past few years. Both the character of Raylan and the world of Harlan come from the pages of master crime-writer Elmore Leonard, who created Givens as a secondary character in two novels about Miami from the mid-’90s, “Pronto” and “Riding the Rap.” It wasn’t until 2001 that Leonard wrote the story “Fire in the Hole,” which made Raylan the star and sent him back home to Kentucky. This story became the basis for the pilot episode of “Justified” in 2010.

Pulp Fiction: ‘Justified’ and Hollywood’s Love Affair with Elmore Leonard

Word and Film

FX’s acclaimed drama series “Justified” returns for its fourth season on January 8. Inspired by Elmore Leonard’s stories, it’s about Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), a Deputy U.S. Marshal transferred from Miami back to his coal-mining hometown of Harlan, Kentucky. Raylan’s run-ins with the crooks of the week, as well as his personal relationships with the community’s various outlaw organizations (which includes his father), form the basis of this modern Western. Riveting, funny, and with an outstanding cast (notably Walton Goggins as sometime antagonist Boyd Crowder), it’s one of the best shows on television — and one of Leonard’s favorite versions of his own work.

A Conversation with Walton Goggins

The Los Angeles Times
BYLINE: Irene Lacher

Alabama-born Walton Goggins is best known for playing corrupt cop Shane Vendrell on “The Shield” and born-again ex-con Boyd Crowder on “Justified,” which earned him an Emmy nomination; the crime drama returns for its fourth season Jan. 8. But Goggins also dispelled any preconceptions about his limits as an actor this year with divergent roles in the films “Django Unchained” and “Lincoln” as well as a recent guest spot on “Sons of Anarchy.”
