I think there’s only one example of Elmore using a particular first name for both a black guy and a white guy.

The name? Maurice. As in Maurice “Snoopy” Miller, Out of Sight, and Maurice Zola, LaBrava.

Or did I miss something?

He doesn’t actually appear in the book, but Greta Wyatt in Freaky Deaky says they always called her brother Robert Taylor, never a nickname or a shorter form. Then there’s Robert Taylor in Tishomingo Blues.

Bobby Kopas in Mr. Majestyk and Bobby Shy in 52 Pickup.

And Bobby Deo in Riding the Rap completes the trifecta—black, white, Latino. Now that’s got to be the only one of those.

You must be driving on the freeway without your Bandits:

Colonel Dagoberto Godoy Diaz is the un-diminutive of Bertie.

Yes, of course. And I just reread that one, too. What can I tell you?

Didn’t someone, (Delaney?) say, “what do you call him, Dago?”

OK, try this one on for size: without looking it up, what’s the true name of Raji from Be Cool?

(It’s a minor mindblower).

LACrim,

What about Louis Gara from The Switch/Rum Punch (white) and Louis Lewis from Riding the Rap (black)?

Thanks LACrim. I caught that after I fired my post. You are an old veteran of this site, where do you stand on Elmore’s top 5? Would be curious where you come out on this?
