Publicity from the movies did a lot to raise Elmore’s profile. The State of Michigan declared January 16, 1998 “Elmore Leonard Day” in a ceremony at a book signing in Birmingham, Michigan for his new book, Cuba Libre, a “tropical western” set in Cuba during theSpanish-American War.
