Biography
A Serious Novelist Who Doesn’t Have to be “Serious”
|
1985 was the turning point for Elmore. He was getting serious novelist attention but was not burdened by the responsibility of being one. The fact is, serious novelists were reading him for enjoyment. This year was marked by his getting on the New York Times bestseller list, and on the cover of Newsweek magazine. Everybody from Stephen King to George Will sang his praises. The movie version of Stick came out in 1985 and was a disappointment. 52 Pickup was better, but Hollywood had yet to put the Elmore Leonard sound and sense of humor on the screen.
